Tax Season is quickly approaching! If you personally prepare your taxes each year, you know it can be a stressful process. Are you declaring all of the deductions you are entitled to? Have there been changes to Tax laws that you are not aware of? Regardless of whether you are filing individual taxes or corporate taxes, when you are ready to leave the job to a professional, keep these things in mind.

Make sure that you ask for credentials and that the person you are paying has a current PTIN, or Preparer Tax Identification Number. As of 2011, it is required by Federal law that the PTIN number is current and registered. The potential tax preparer should also be active in a professional organization that offers continuing education for tax purposes and holds them to a certain standard. Tax laws are modified every year and you want to hire someone who is educated on these changes and meticulous when preparing your return.

Do some research and investigate the prospective preparer online. Read reviews and ask for references. You want to make sure that the person that you choose to review all of your financial information has a great reputation and is trustworthy. Even though you may be paying a professional to file for you, YOU are ultimately responsible should there be any questions in the future or your return is audited by the IRS.

Make sure that you are aware of all of the fees involved. Does the fee for tax preparation include filing? Different preparers charge different rates. They may have a flat fee or charge by the hour, although, a CPA is not allowed to charge a percentage of your return. There may be additional services offered at an additional cost. You want to know exactly where you stand when your return is completed, so ask questions.

Be prepared to hand the tax preparer all of the necessary information that they will need, including receipts and paperwork. Regardless of the complexity of your return, you should be able to show the professional proof of your income and any information concerning expenses or deductions you are expecting to include. This information will help insure the return is filed correctly.

Once the return is complete you must review the work. Make sure you are aware of all of the information and that it is correct. The preparer must sign the return and include their PTIN number, stipulated by law. You should be provided with a copy of the finished return to keep for your personal records.

Doing you taxes can be overwhelming and tedious. The good news is that there are people out there who are eager and licensed to help. Do your research and look at all of your options. You want to make sure you find a credible and honest professional to help you prepare and file your return.

If you use QuickBooks and credit cards to manage your business finances take note. There are a few steps that if skipped can cause major bumps in the road of your finances. If you want your QuickBooks accounting to be right on the money, it’s important to be sure you are handling credit card transactions carefully.

Small business owners who have business credit cards have to record in their QuickBooks the actual individual charges made to their credit card. It is not enough to just record the payment. But why not, you ask? The reason is that each individual credit card charge has to be classified to one of your expense accounts to show up correctly on your Profit & Loss statement.

Recording the individual charges is also necessary for your tax return to be prepared correctly. Many times the credit card payment is only recorded in QuickBooks as a lump sum paying off the credit card, but that leaves out a very important step in recording the company’s transactions correctly. For a company’s taxes to reflect all the expenses correctly, all credit card charges must be recorded individually and classified to the appropriate expense account in QuickBooks.

Texas QuickBooks Help is designed to work with you one on one to ensure your business finances are in order. No one wants to be surprised at tax time and having an expert look over your files is the best way to be sure that all is well in your business finance world.

As you are starting a new year and nearing tax time, it’s time to take a closer look at your Quickbooks files and be sure that you have everything correct in order to provide accurate recording.

The accounts receivable area of your files can be one place where mistakes are commonly seen and can be frustrating to try to solve.

When you see your list of customers you likely know how much they owe, but for some reason their balance is incorrect. This can lead to hours of frustration trying to figure out just what has gone wrong. It is wise to have a professional look over your Quickbooks files with you to ensure that you are accurately recording and keeping exact records for your business.

If someone has paid their account in full, but it still shows a balance owed, this can alter their profit or loss number. The balance in your Quickbooks accounts receivable must be accurate to maintain correct financial statements. When a customer shows a negative balance in their Accounts Receivable, this means the customer has a credit balance and has overpaid their account. Your clients will not be to thrilled with overpaying, and your Quickbooks numbers won’t add up if you have this mistake in your file.

If your accounts receivable is incorrect, there could be a mistake in invoicing. If you did not record an invoice, but did record the payment, your records will not balance correctly. Each invoice and payment must be individually and accurately recorded. Also a payment may not be applied against the correct invoice or even the correct customer. It’s easy to get in a hurry and apply a payment to the wrong invoice or customer, so take the time to be sure it’s done right.

Spelling mistakes can wreak havoc in your Quickbooks file. Simply adding an “s” at the end of the client name can wreak havoc in your bookkeeping records. If you have the client name recorded without and “s” and then record it with an “s” at the end, it will be considered two separate accounts and will result in miscalculations.

Texas Quickbooks Help is here for you to help you discover these and other errors within your Quickbooks file. Don’t struggle alone, let us help you stay on track and keep the financial health of your business in check!

Are you keeping good bookkeeping records within your Quickbooks file? If you are just not sure, it might be time to have an expert review your Quickbooks file to be sure you are getting maximum deductions and not overpaying come tax time. Here are just a few ways you may have made small errors in your file that could be making a big difference come tax time.

1. Misclassification of Owner Contributions
If you have donated your own money to your business this year to cover a business expense and simply recorded it as money coming in, Quickbooks will read that as income and it will be taxed as income. You do not need to pay taxes on owner contributions, so be sure to correctly classify this deposit as a contribution from business owner, not simply as income to the business.

2. Misclassification of Owner Loans to Business
Just like when you give your own money to your business, loaning money to your business can also be recorded incorrectly. When you loan money to your business this money is going to be returned to your personal account at some point. If it is just shown as a deposit to your business it will be taxed as income. Specify that this is an owner loan to the business and you will avoid paying taxes unnecessarily.

3. Incorrectly Recording Credit Card Charges
When you use a credit card to buy things for your company, is it crucial to record every charge as exactly what it is, so that it is classified appropriately within your Quickbooks file. For example, if you use your credit card at an office supply store for paper, pens, and printer ink it should be recorded as an office supply purchase. If you simply record the payment to the credit card, Quickbooks will not itemize the list of charges as specific deductions.

4. Incorrectly Recording Sales Tax
Quickbooks is a helpful tool when it comes time to pay sales taxes to the Texas comptroller. If sales tax paid by customers is recorded incorrectly, you will overpay sales taxes to the state. The amount you pay to the state comptroller needs to be recorded correctly through the ‘Pay Sales Tax Liability’ window. Without specifying which part of a customer’s purchase is sales tax, Quickbooks will not give an accurate recording of what you owe.

5. Incorrectly Recording ATM or Debit Card Transactions
One last mistake people make both in their business and in personal finance is incorrect recording of debit card purchases or ATM withdrawals. It’s easy to swipe your card, make a quick transaction and be on your way. It is important to record each debit correctly. Think of it as each time you use your debit/ATM card, it’s the same as writing a check and must be recorded just like a check would be.
